What is mesotrauma®?
Uncouple founder Helen created the concept of mesotrauma® to define and formally recognise the impact caused by the types of stressors that we face daily, yet remain largely unacknowledged.

Although the effects of mesotrauma® may not be immediately obvious, it is her belief that the cumulative effect of these daily stressors are the real culprits behind the stress epidemic and the health-induced and exacerbated health crises of the modern world.

Helen explores mesotrauma® in more detail in her blog article. She came up with the idea during the course of her work when trying to name the impact of the stressors we deal with on a daily basis that wouldn’t be classed as trauma but still have a detrimental effect.
Our bodies tolerate mesotrauma® daily yet we don’t acknowledge it, leaving us susceptible to its dangers, which are then exacerbated by life events and traumas.
Why is it important?
We are in the midst of a stress epidemic and we believe 99% of people are stressed to some degree all of the time. That's because stress comes in so many forms and can be triggered by thousands of stimuli at any point.
That stress accumulates and can keep our bodies on high alert, which does us no good physically or mentally. If you're wondering how bad it can really get - when we look at the most recent top causes of death globally, we have heart disease at the top and also within the top 10, we have lung cancer, Alzheimer’s disease alongside other dementias and diabetes, all of which are linked to stress (albeit not exclusively).
We can slow down or reduce the impact stress has on us by counteracting the stress hormones and building our resilience. Practices such as meditation and good sleep hygiene, exercise and nutritious meals will all help.
Solely relying on these practices though isn't enough. Your body is still experiencing this stress and is under pressure to constantly perform. Imagine for a moment that you are a machine, always switched on. At first you'll notice things slowing down, then parts start wearing, until eventually the machine breaks. That's why taking steps to control the amount of stress you experience in response to every stressor is essential.
